Haiti: China Donates Funds to OAS for Programs on Peace Promotion, Scholarships, and Protection of Children

The Government of the People's Republic of China today presented to the Organization of American States (OAS) a contribution of $97,390 to support various of the organization's programs, including: the Peace Fund, the Scholarship Program for Haiti, the Columbus Memorial Library, and the Inter-American Program for the Prevention and Eradication of Commercial Sexual Exploitation, and Smuggling of and Trafficking in Minors, of the Inter-American Institute of Children (IIN).

At the funds presentation ceremony, the OAS Director of International Affairs, Irene Klinger, welcomed the support provided by the government of China and stressed the importance of such cooperation on key issues for the Organization.

The Alternate Observer of China, Wang Liang, praised the role the OAS plays in promoting peace, development and integration in the region and reiterated China's interest "to bring to a high point the cooperation with the organization."

With the contribution made today, China has in 2011 contributed a total of 247,390 U.S. dollars to support programs in the areas of democracy, education, water resource management, the Lecture Series of the Americas, fellowships and electoral observation.

China has been an OAS Permanent Observer since May 2004 and has actively supported various initiatives of the OAS since 2005.
